You may be feeling many things – terribly sad, devastated, angry, empty, suicidal …

You may feel that those around you don’t understand the depth of your grief and sadness.

You may be confused, angry, annoyed with yourself for feeling so upset – society tends to accept us grieving for the death of a human being, but not so much for the death of an animal.

You may be thinking that your reaction must be extreme – that you haven’t seen or heard about anyone else getting so upset after the death or loss of an animal – so surely this isn’t ‘normal’ …

However … you may have spent more hours each day and night with this animal, than you may have spent with any human being.  They may have been with you through birthdays, house moves, separation, growing up …

As pets, our companion animals, they are always there, giving us love, comfort and friendship.

Everybody responds to grief differently.  However, if you are surprised at the depth of your grief, perhaps the question is – not ‘why are you feeling so upset’, but rather:

‘… why wouldn’t you be upset ?’

You can no longer, talk to, hear, see, hug or live your life with a being who has shared your life with you. That is a big change – and a big loss.
